Peppe Dell'Acqua teaches social psychiatry at the University of Trieste. Together with the neurologist and psychiatrist Franco Basaglia (1924-1980), he has shared the reasons behind the medical revolution that shook up the organisation of psychiatric care in Italy, leading to the closure of state mental hospitals. He led the mental health department in Trieste until 2012. In 2010, he founded the psychiatry series "180. Archivio critico della salute mentale" (Edizioni Alpha Beta). He is one of the promoters of the "Forum salute mentale" (of which he is editorial director, together with Vito D'Anza) and has published a several monographs, including "Fuori come va? Famiglie e persone con schizofrenia" (2003 e 2013) and "Non ho l'arma che uccide il leone" (2007 and 2015).
