The story of Pietro Bartolo and his commitment to migrants in the Mediterranean has become universal in the film "Fuocoammare" by the director and documentary maker Gianfranco Rosi, winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2016. A surgeon specialising in gynaecology, Bartolo has been involved in the medical centre in Lampedusa since 1991, and for more than 25 years he has been assisting men, women and children with few resources at his disposal at the centre of one of the largest humanitarian emergencies of our age. He has received numerous honours, including the Cavaliere dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, the Premio Sérgio Vieira de Mello (Cracovia 2015) and the Premio Don Beppe Diana. In 2017, he retraced the steps in his personal and professional life in the book "Lacrime di sale", written with the journalist Lidia Tilotta. «Through his words, Pietro Bartolo," says Gianfranco Rosi, "has the ability to make you understand humanity and its immense serenity, the sense of tragedy and the duty of helping and welcoming».
