The Magic of the Hebrides

Peter May with Carlo Lucarelli

Two years after his first appearance at Festivaletteratura, Peter May returns to Mantua to mark the Italian release of L'uomo degli scacchi, the third and final book in his Lewis Trilogy. His discussion with Carlo Lucarelli revolves around the Scottish Outer Hebrides, the captivating setting of his most recent books.

May describes the Hebrides as the place that really makes him feel at home, even if he was actually born in Glasgow. Those same islands he used to hate when he was working there on a television show in the 1990s, but which years later, looking back, really fulfilled his feeling of Scottishness.

A raw and real Scottishness, one that can only be found on those islands, with their wild nature and weather, the breathtaking landscapes and the magic that seems to encapsulate them. May’s protagonist is the personification of this concept, always looking at the past to try to understand his future, in a mental battle with himself. May revealed to his audience at Palazzo San Sebastiano that he will soon be releasing a new book. The characters and stories will change, but the setting will remain the same: that wily, windy archipelago off the west coast of Scotland.
