Volunteers at work
Volunteers’ contribution to Festivaletteratura is paramount. They have been the Festivaletteratura backbone since its very beginning. But there is more to them: their creative input, their relationship with Festivaletteratura’s collaborators is a source of ideas and solutions that enrich the Festival more and more. This year, Festivaletteratura relies even more on volunteers, offering the young new ways to emerge:
Cortile Frattini. The traditional refreshment area for the blue T-shirts, this year the courtyard turns into a small volunteers’ Republic, a self-managed area full of surprises and more meetings. The volunteers will invite here some of the authors attending the Festival. Here, they will chat and interview them. There will be plenty of musical activities and spontaneous performances that will last until Sunday night’s concluding party.
Moreno Gentili and the Festival’s photographers. A golden opportunity for the volunteers-photographers. Indeed, they will be guided in a workshop led by the internationally well-established photographer Moreno Gentili, who will hold a workshop on 3rd (afternoon) and 4th September (morning) with Aimara Garlaschelli and Luisa Ronchi for photography enthusiasts, guiding them step by step and helping them with helpful and professional advice.
Videofestival. The Festival’s cameramen too have an opportunity to take part in a training workshop, on 7th September(all day). Cult’s editors and engineers (Sky satellite TV cultural channel) will help cameramen to produce a documentary about Festivaletteratura for TV channels and the Web. The Volunteers’ Canteen. The students and teachers of the assistant cook course at Centro di Formazione Professionale della Provincia di Mantova (Mantua’s Vocational Training Centre), will take care of the feeding of the volunteers, the engineers and the Festivaletteratura’s guests in the canteen at Cortile Frattini.
Meeting with the National Community Service representative The Head of National Community Service outlines to the volunteers more ways to do voluntary work, beyond Festivaletteratura as well. At Cortile Frattini.

Domus Folenga
Loggia del Grano will become Domus Folenga from Wednesday 8th September until Sunday 12th September 2004. At its eighth edition, Festivaletteratura intends to celebrate one of the most distinguished Mantuan figures, Teofilo Folengo, through a reading of his Baldus, a masterpiece of Renaissance literature. This masterpiece is still little known to the masses. Mario Artioli and Giorgio Bernardi Perini have created and supervised this initiative to allow everybody to have a taste of this piece of work. Directed by Gianfranco De Bosio, actors, Folengo scholars, guest writers, volunteers and organizers will take turns, during the whole of the Festival’s five days, at the reading of the 25 books that make up the macaronic poem, in the Italian version edited by Giuseppe Tonna. The reading will be accompanied by Claudio Gallico’s music. Festivaletteratura for the occasion re-publishes L’esposizione del Baldus by Ugo Enrico Paoli, published by Le Monnier in 1934 as a preface to a Folengo’s anthology.

Progetto Nuova Drammaturgia (New Dramaturgy Project)
European dramaturgy is currently experiencing a successful period. This is particularly true in Germany, where in recent years the production of new theatre texts by young authors has reached interesting scope. It is the Goethe-Institut that supports the promotion of these authors through a number of projects. Festivaletteratura 2004 takes part in this promotion with Progetto Nuova Drammaturgia, a project set up in conjunction with Goethe-Institut Mailand of Goethe-Institut Rom, co-ordinated by Luca Scarlini. Three appointments involving the stage reading of two young German authors’ texts, Prima/Dopo (Before/After) by Roland Schimmelpfenning, with O Zoo No theatre company, Le nevrosi sessuali dei nostri genitori (Our parents’ sexual neuroses) by Lukas Barfuss, with Lady Godiva theatre Company, and the meeting between Schimmelpfenning and Sonia Antinori, a leading Italian drama figure.

Young Writers 2004
Young Writers will take place for the third year running. The project is supported by Festivaletteratura in partnership with the Norwegian, British and German literary festivals and Illycaffé. The project selects four young authors under 32 of several mother tongues who will be promoted and read at the most important international literary festivals. They will present the readers with a short story on a theme which every year is specially chosen. Specifically, this year’s theme will be monsters. Ingeborg Arvola, Valeria Parrella, Owen Sheers and Gernot Wofram have accepted the challenge telling about everyday life monsters, frightening for their triviality.
