Valerio Varesi is amongst the most read and translated cult detective-story writers. Born in Turin in 1959 to Parma-born parents, after completing his degree in Philosophy at the Univeristy of Bologna he worked as a journalist at Gazzetta di Parma and as a correspondent for La Stampa and la Repubblica. He made his debut in fiction in 1998 with Ultime notizie di una fuga, an adaptation from the famous Carretta case. In 2000 he published Bersaglio l'oblio, where detective and gourmet Soneri appears for the first time. In 2002 he wrote his third detective novel Cineclub del mistero, Premio Fedeli winner. From 2004 to 2021 he released many novels with Soneri as the protagonist, which were also turned into a miniseries broadcast by Rai. With La sentenza (2011), Il rivoluzionario (2013) e Lo stato di ebbrezza (2015) Varesi goes beyond the scope of noir and offers three interesting stories about the Italian Republic.
