Former Professor of Medieval History at the Department of Historical Sciences and Cultural Heritage at the University of Siena, Duccio Balestracci, born in 1949, he has written numerous studies on Italy in the High Middle Ages, the most recent of which are La battaglia di Montaperti (Laterza, 2017), a text that meticulously reconstructs the comparison between the Florentines and the Sienese in 1260, and Stato d'assedio. Assedianti e assediati dal Medioevo all'età moderna (Il Mulino, 2021).. Among the recurring themes of his academic research are the echoes of the Middle Ages in the construction of Italian identity, holidays, urban centres and governance of the waters in Tuscany in the pre-Industrial Age, the relations of travel and the link between mediaeval travellers and other cultures (an example being the 2008 work Terre ignote strana gente).
