A writer and literary critic, he is regarded as a true master of English language style and his novels are considered a perfect example of balance between refined and precise writing and black humour. He started his career with Long Lankin (1970), he then devoted himself to novels with a scientific background such as Kepler and The Newton Letter: An Interlude. With The book of evidence he attained international success, which was confirmed by his later novels, Athena, The Untouchable, Eclypse, The Sea, a nostalgic portrait of a man recovering from the slow and painful death of his wife (which won the Man Brooker Prize), and Nightspawn, a sophisticated author crime novel able to conjure up the detective story atmosphere of bygone times.
