«I know that I haven't made the movies I should have; my talent and my vocation should have given more. But dissatisfaction is the driving force that keeps me alive». Pupi Avati born in Bologna in 1938. For a few years, he play the clarinet in a jazz band, and then he works for a deep-frozen food company. Inspired by Fellini's art and spurred by a mysterious millionaire, in the late 1960s he starts his cinema career with Balsamus, l'uomo di Satana and Thomas e gli indemoniati. In 1975, he collaborates to the script of Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma by Pier Paolo Pasolini. In the following ten year he writes and directs many cult movies (La casa dalle finestre che ridono, Dancing Paradise, Una gita scolastica e Zeder, Regalo di Natale and the sequel La rivincita di Natale, till the most recents Il signor diavolo and Lei mi parla ancora), proving his unique style and extraordinary directing abilities. «Bard of Bologna and its surrounding area, a nearly obsessive narrator of this corner of land», as Silvana Mazzocchi wrote, he also authored two autobiographies and several books including the novels Il ragazzo in soffitta (2015), the unusual story of a friendship characterized by many of the issues and intriguing aspect that has made his films unforgettable –, Il signor diavolo (2018), L'archivio del diavolo (2020) and L'alta fantasia (2022).
