Born in Dehra Dun, in Northern India, Vandana Shiva graduated in Physics at the University of Western Ontario. After experiencing the social impoverishment of her country and the environmental abuses from the World Bank, since the 80's she has become an ecologist and activist known the world over for her fights in favour of the planet. She dealt with agriculture, nutrition, intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology and genetic engineering. In 1993 she received the Right Livelihood Award and in 2010 the Sydney Peace Prize. Her works aim to raise awareness about the issues of globalisation, recommending alternatives to economic development, respecting local traditions.
