History between the Verses

A poetic approach to grasp fragments of history

Despite the rainy and damp evening, the audience in the hall of the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria was excited to meet the two poets with two very peculiar books: Alessandro Baldacci (Il dio di Norimberga/The god of Nuremberg) and Vincenzo Frungillo (Ogni cinque bracciate/Every five embraces).

Both authors have interwoven the concept of poetry, history through everyday human experience, finding tiny simple bits of the massive concept of History in the lives of ordinary people . Through the image of the brutal and instinctual childhood of his characters, Baldacci tries to portray the rhythm and dynamism of life itself. Life as a deep energy is also portrayed by Frungillo and his five East German Olympic swimmers, who through the verses of the book share the illusory belief of success and the inevitably tragic conclusion of the human condition. The authors decided to portray the development of human History through simple experiences of simple people. They managed to transform the victims into the main characters.

However, the stylistic choices are not the only surprising element of the poems. There is also a perturbing element that in both scenarios manages to create a connection with the world described and with the reader, despite being weird and unfamiliar. The god of the rats is a repulsive figure, but at the same time is full of images that are not new to the audience. The water of the swimming pool is a well-known element to most people, yet the author was able to transform it into an unusual portal to the minds and souls of his characters and their participatory relationships.

The event was an effective mixture of debates, interviews and readings from the books, which kept the audience engaged and interested. Clearly, it can be said that words of an ode to life resonated in the room as the rain continued to fall outside.
