Understanding Migration

Shattering stereotypes on one of the most pressing issues of recent times

Humans migrate, we have always done so and and the reasons for moving from one country to another are limitless. It could be a job, more opportunities abroad, or even more so in recent times, because they have no other choice: war and poverty are often the main reasons that lead people to migrate to other countries. A lack of clear information results in misunderstanding and the formation of a number of stereotypes. Open Migration, Forensic Oceanography, and the Archivio Delle Memorie Migranti are trying their best to turn these stereotypes on their head.

(caricamento...)

On 12 April, 2015 a migrant ship carrying 400 people capsized and all on board are believed to have died. The tragedy of this event was only augmented by the nearby presence of a local ship, which watched as it happened nearby without acting. Because of these stereotypes and lack of knowledge of migrants, people watched as 400 people died. The purpose of these organizations is to inform people about migrants and why they migrate, and they use various methods to spread knowledge and awareness. They provide quizzes to show the test taker how much they really know about migration, as well as presentation of videos, movies, and articles. The Punto Informativo at Festivaletteratura, has computers for taking quizzes, as well as informational billboards and papers. They also provide data about many recent events regarding migration and articles about the shipwreck.

Migration from Syria, and the Middle East in general, is at an all-time high. Migrants move to escape violence but because of animosity toward immigrants from these countries, they are faced with violence once again. Open Migration, Forensic Oceanography, and the Archivio Delle Memorie Migranti are using media such as movies, games and articles in their battles to inform and educate, combatting hate and ignorance.
