genomaThe word emerged from the primeval soup of scientific vocabulary sometime during the middle of the last century. At first hesitant and uncertain in meaning, it evolved to become that thing that it is now: the sum total of our genetic material, all our DNA. So genome is us. It is about our future and our past, about the creatures we were when we took our first, hesitant steps onto the open grasslands of Africa four million years ago and the creatures we will be in the dawning of a brave new world. And as a word it embodies the human condition, carrying within it hints of genius and genesis, but also something deformed and malign. Indeed Gnome itself is a hybrid of meaning: it may signify an aphorism, a short meaningful saying; or it may mean a short, squat figure with a cunning and malicious mind and a store of treasure to guard. Our genome is our treasure for within its intricate workings lies all there is to be human. It is at once body and spirit, the machinery that drives us to conflict and confusion but also the machinery that evokes the sublime side of our nature, our genius, the spirit that resides within us and can bring us to contemplate the stars.
La parola genoma è emersa dalla zuppa primordiale del vocabolario scientifico intorno alla metà del secolo scorso. Inizialmente di significato esitante e incerto, si è evoluta fino a diventare ciò che è adesso: la somma totale del nostro materiale genetico, il nostro DNA completo. Dunque, il genoma è noi. Ha a che vedere con il nostro futuro e il nostro passato, con le creature che eravamo quando, quattro milioni di anni fa, abbiamo mosso i primi passi esitanti sulle vaste praterie africane e le creature che saremo all’alba del mondo nuovo. E come parola incarna la condizione umana, portandosi dentro tracce di genio e genesi, ma anche qualcosa di deforme e maligno. In effetti Gnome in sé è un ibrido: può significare un aforisma (la gnome in italiano, NdT), un breve detto denso di significato; oppure può riferirsi a un essere basso e tozzo dalla mente scaltra e maliziosa e un tesoro da custodire. Il nostro genoma è il nostro tesoro, perché all’interno dei suoi intricati meccanismi è racchiuso tutto ciò che è umano. È insieme corpo e spirito, il congegno che ci conduce al conflitto e alla confusione ma anche quello che evoca il lato sublime della nostra natura, del nostro genio, lo spirito che risiede dentro di noi e può indurci a contemplare le stelle.
