Festivaletteratura malinconia per un luogo

Just to focus on the word hiraeth, in this context. I think it is a peculiarly Celtic thing and in terms of the literature of the Celtic language, Welsh being a Celtic language, there seems to be a fascination with removing yourself from the place and the people that you love in order to write about it from a distance which, to tie on to the question about su ering, certainly seems as something other people do. The Irish writers were in Paris, they left, and a lot of the songs, a lot of the literature is written by people who have left the country and then retrospectively coming to love it, while there is actually quite a degree of dismissiveness when you stay there. So there is almost a deliberate sense of putting yourself away from the things which are then going to create the sense of belonging. Hiraeth is not homesickness in the way the English homesickness exists. Hiraeth is a sort of feeling that you might get if you want to put on sad music because it makes you feel better. It is what you choose to do in some respect. So it is melancholy, but it is chosen.
