Born in Bucarest in 1956, where he still leaves, Mircea Cartarescu is regarded the most important contemporary Romanian author. A poet, novelist and literary critic he has been awarded many prizes in his own country and abroad. His books have been translated in all major European languages. With "Nostalgia" he won the 13th edition of the prestigious Giuseppe Acerbi literary prize.
