Born in 1964, a reader, writer and festival producer, he founded and directed the Hay Festival, the most famous British literary festival. He studied at Paris University and obtained a Master's Degree in Medieval and Modern Literature. He has also been awarded two honorary degrees from The Open University and the University of Glamorgan for his commitment to cultural dissemination.
