A philosopher, narrator, and one of the most influential Albanian intellectuals of the last decade, Lea Ypi (Durres, 1979) grew up during the final period of communist Albania before moving to Italy. In Rome, she graduated in Philosophy and Literature from "La Sapienza" University and earned a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence. She currently teaches Political Philosophy at the London School of Economics and is a permanent researcher at the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin. Her reflection has focused primarily on Enlightenment and Marxism, with a particular emphasis on the concepts of justice and freedom. Her memoir Free: Coming of Age at the End of History, published in 2021, achieved great resonance, being translated into thirty languages and receiving a shower of international awards. In 2025, her collection of essays entitled Confini di classe. Diseguaglianze, migrazione e cittadinanza nello stato capitalista was released in Italy, followed in 2026 by Dignity, a fragmented memoir of her grandmother that proves to be "a compelling read, with an echo of Elena Ferrante in its way of narrating adolescence, marriage, friendship, and the intellectual debate between family, class struggle, and politics" (The New York Times). She lives and works in London.
