Emmanuel Carrère was born in Paris in 1957. After graduating, he worked as a film critic for Positif and Télérama. In 1983, he began writing his first novels and numerous screenplays for films and television series based on works by Georges Simenon and others. His poetics lie at a fruitful crossroads between narrative essay and journalism, novel and biographical account, and are almost always centered on the link between illusion and reality in contemporary culture. Many of his books have been adapted into screenplays, and in 2005 he directed The Moustache, a feature film based on his novel Baffi and starring Vincent Lindon and Emmanuelle Devos. Limonov dates back to 2011, the original biography of the Russian writer and politician Eduard Limonov, which became an international literary sensation and won the Prix Renaudot. According to Le Monde, the text – published in dozens of countries – is "a view that is not distant but lateral, capable of bringing out the sublime and the ridiculous; a work in which the French author, with a writing of illuminating precision, sought to 'unfold' the complexities of the history of this end of the century." In 2024, the book was adapted into the film of the same name starring Ben Whishaw as Limonov. Among his most recent works are Yoga (2021) and V13 (2022), a tight and passionate collection of articles written by Carrère during the trial of those responsible for the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks. In 2024, Ucronia was published by Adelphi, followed in 2026 by Kolchoz, a memoir about his maternal family roots honored, among many accolades, with the Prix Médicis.
